Demon Slayer's success in the year 2019 was undeniable, including the anime winning the main award of the Tokyo Anime Awards Festival 2020, which will have an award ceremony held in March! (Check out on here post with the list of champions).
After the great success of the anime, sales of the manga soared, breaking record after record. It even achieved the incredible milestone of becoming the top 2 selling manga, second only to One Piece. While Demon Slayer sold 10.8 million manga volumes from November 19, 2018 to November 17, 2019, One Piece sold 12.7 million manga volumes
Shonen Jump's weekly editor-in-chief, Hiroyuki Nakano, in an interview with the Nikkei Entertainment, spoke about the success of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Check out:
“Normally, a manga gradually sells more copies during the anime’s run, but Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba’s sales skyrocketed right after the anime ended.”
“The way people interact with anime has changed, and I feel like we've entered a new phase.”
Hiroyuki Nakano
The editor-in-chief's phrase refers to people who watched through Streaming services. Who watched the anime completely after the weekly release ended. A change of habit, which has been attracting more people, fleeing the TV or DVD standard, the growing consumption through new media.
The difference in consumption that this “explosion” would have brought, since the non-following of the anime by the fans, did not generate an increase in sales of the manga during serialization, but after it. After all, part of sales usually occurs after the word of mouth that occurs after watching the anime.
Demon Slayer, began serialization in 2016, but success came in 2019, with the anime having 26 episodes. The success was so much that although the anime had not yet finished its exhibition, it already had a movie announced.
