Futurama is scheduled to return next year on hulu, with most of the original cast returning to their roles as Planet Express crew members. But this wouldn't be the first time the animated series that sprang from the mind of Matt Groening has made a big comeback. In 2013, the series gave us the second of its series finales in the meantime, with this following the initial series finale of “The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings” on Fox. With another series finale clearly coming to an end, the show's return denies Meanwhile?
If you don't know the backstory of Futurama's season two finale, meanwhile saw Fry and Leela existing in a moment in time, with time being frozen but the two main characters living the entirety of their lives during that moment. An important part of the series was Fry's love for Leela, which was explored in Meanwhile and Devil's Hands. But the last series finale saw Fry and Leela growing old with each other and nearly dying of old age in the frozen moment in time. In the final moments of the finale, they are saved by Professor Farnsworth, but with a twist.
A new ending by “reliving” all events in Futurama
In the final moments, Hubert J. Farnsworth reveals to Fry and Leela that they will not remember the events of their lives outside of time. So, in this way, they will “relive” all the events that happened throughout the original series. Therefore, bringing back the series does not negate the events that transpired during the meantime. In itself, as the series finale gave the Planet Express member the excuse to simply move on and act as if these events never happened.
Of course, that leaves the relationship between Fry and Leela up in the air and it will be interesting to see what their status is when Hulu brings the series back. Meanwhile, it was seen by many as the perfect series finale for Futurama, but continuing with new episodes certainly doesn't negate the episodes that took place within it.
Return after 10 years
It is not the first time that something like this happens, a 'revival' or 'reboot' if you prefer, it happens from time to time, with programs acclaimed by the public. After all, Futurama is a design that marked generations and was a tremendous success. You will hardly find anyone from the 2000s onwards, who had the opportunity to see that they will not remember.
After all, a story, where a simple pizza delivery man, is accidentally frozen, and only wakes up 1000 years later, is hardly forgotten. It turned out to be great entertainment, and that's for various age groups. From the youngest, and even adults.
And to make it all better, know that the revival is closer than expected. Futurama had its last episode on September 4, 2013, and after almost 10 years, it is announced that it will return to streaming platforms. However, for those who want to watch the show, know that it will be part of Disney's streaming packages, being necessary to subscribe to the platform if you want to watch the new episodes.
In addition, Futurama is scheduled to arrive next year, that is, in 2023, as much as many are anxious about the arrival, we can't rush things, can we? After all, no one wants a poorly made animation, the better done, the better for us consumers, because we've been waiting since 2013, one more year, it won't make much difference.
But, what about you, tell me which is your favorite Futurama series ending between the two? And what expectations do you see these next twenty new episodes coming to an end? Feel free to let us know in the comments.
