We recently discussed in an article here which were the animes that were submitted for the Oscars 2021 (Demon Slayer, Lupine… Anime Movies Submitted to Oscars!). However, in this edition of the award, no anime passed the evaluation, another year in which animes are snubbed? the question remains! But the purpose of this article is not to talk about the anime that didn't make it, but about which animations were nominated for the 2021 Oscars.
The list of nominees came out this Monday (15). Published by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Disney – Pixar and Netflix lead the nominations, with two out of five nominations for the best animated feature. The highlight for this category is Soul, the latest Disney/Pixar film is the only animation from this Oscar that will compete in more than one category. In this case, it will compete for Best Animated Short Film, as well as for Best Original Soundtrack; Best sound.

Streaming at the Oscars.
Worth noting is the growing number of films produced directly for streaming platforms. But amid so many platforms, Netflix leads the nominations is Netflix. The platform has 18 nominations in various categories, including the much-desired Best Films with Mank and The Chicago 7. While Disney+ and Amazon Prime each have 4 nominations.
What explains this large share of films produced by Streaming is the new rule that allows the participation of films that have not been released in theaters. Which means that, for example, if Netflix wants to submit a movie, it doesn't need to rent a movie theater just to show a movie for a week and send it to the Oscars, as it did with The Irishman. However, this rule that allows the participation of these films is only provisional. It can even only be valid for this edition, at most for the next one as well. After all, although little by little countries are returning to normality with the arrival of vaccines. But maybe that won't happen in time, harming most of the studios.
